Stripes came to Big Sky Ranch in a race against time. His original caregivers noticed he was declining and rushed him to a clinic, where he was diagnosed with diabetes and diabetic neuropathy—a painful nerve condition caused by high blood sugar. Facing an overwhelming estimate of $400 a month for his treatments, his family was turned away unable to afford his care, leaving Stripes on death's door with blood glucose levels soaring in the 800s.

Desperate to save him, his family reached out to Big Sky Ranch. Our medical team immediately took Stripes in, stabilized his blood sugar, and began treatment for his neuropathy. Though it broke his family's heart, they surrendered him to the sanctuary so he could receive the lifelong medical care they couldn't provide.

Today, Stripes is a reserved, skittish boy who prefers a quiet life. While he might hide when visitors enter his cottage, he occasionally enjoys a gentle pet from a patient friend. But when the room empties out, his true personality shines—he can often be found curled up on the rug, comfortably snuggled side-by-side with his best friend and fellow diabetic cottage-mate, Bennie!
